santiago calatrava

as anyone who views the skyline and overall architecture of new york city on a regular basis has probably noticed, there is a need for new voices and vision to help shape the future landscape of the city. where most recent major construction projects have been staid and uninspired, one project is showing a great deal of promise. spanish architect santiago calatrava's proposed design of the new world trade center transportation center is bold vision that could help salvage what is shaping up to be a squandered opportunity to totally rebuild ground zero (see daniel libeskind's freedom tower being slowly dismantled by politicians). the design, which conjures an image of a bird in flight, is an inspired choice for a transportation hub as it evokes both the notion of fluid movement and the notion of peace and serenity. it is impossible to foresee how this project will proceed, but as someone who will interact with whatever is built on this space on a daily basis, i sincerely hope that mr. calatrava's vision is realized as he intended.
