sky mirror
lunch is normally a time for me to remove myself from the world of work and grab a little, fleeting moment of sanity. however yesterday's lunch was altogether different. eschewing the usual cobb salad or french onion soup for lunch, i opted instead for a heaping serving of public art, in the form of anish kapoor's sky mirror @ rockefeller center.
i was familiar with kapoor's recent public work, as i had made of point of seeking out cloud gate (2004) on my last trip to chicago's millennium park. not unlike cloud gate, sky mirror is a large, polished stainless steel sculpture that engages it's audience immediately upon encountering it. in the case of sky mirror, it casts a reflection of both the sky above and the iconic silhouette of 30 rockefeller plaza east bound and the bustling action of 5th avenue on the west bound side. the amazing thing about this work is that while it is a massive 23-ton sculpture, it is capable of almost acting as a void or window into something far more serene and peaceful than the chaotic reality directly below and surrounding it.
my only wish is that new york could find a permanent home for kappor's work ala chicago, but unfortunately this work will be removed october 27th.

That is pretty cool. I too wish it could be a permanent fixture. What a shame. Will they move it to a nother location, or does it cease to be art once they remove it?
the work is slated to leave manhattan on october 27th and there are ongoing discussions as to where it will travel next. anish kapoor is an english artist and england as a country is rather open to public works of art, so i wouldn't doubt for a minute that it ends up somewhere in great britain.
if however, the work is not put back into circulation, i would say that the dialogue generated by it's time in the city would ensure that it will continue to function as art, regardless of its location.
