feeling blue
not unlike penn state's octogenarian leader, i am feeling a little battered and bruised heading into this weekend's tilt with temple. my spirit and enthusiasm have been broken and my palette full of the taste of disappointment and underachievement. with no chance to salvage any sort of meaningful definition to the season until bowl season, the nits will have to lace 'em up and play with a business like approach, so as to avoid late december at the alamo or even sunny detroit.
for the longest time i had rationalized that psu would be better off when old joe packed it in and rode off into the sunset, but after last weekend's unmitigated disaster (see the 4th & 1 that resulted in a loss of 5 yards), i am not so sure. best case scenario, no injuries (coaching staff included, unless it is jaypa) and nothing embarrassing (i.e. letting temple score more than 3 points or faltering in the red zone...even once).
somehow this is a new low for me. back in 2003/04 the losing seemed like an anomaly that would eventually straighten itself out, but now all the hallmarks of those lean years are cropping up again, plain as day, and it is the winning season of '05-06 that seems like the anomaly.
it has long been said that 'a leopard can't change it's spots' or in my case that a lion can't get the gd blue and white out of his system, and that being said, i'll be rooting hard for the nits and thinking good thoughts about their prospects for turning the ship around. that is the blessing and the curse of being a college football fan. dear old state overwhelm the owls in talent and eventually on the scoreboard. nits 31, owls 6.
go state...beat the owls

I won't say any more than the Lions will win by 38. We'll miss you at the tailgate. It's never the same with you and Ashley.
Love,
Mom
Ah, Temple. I often have to hold my temples while watching Penn State play. Or maybe I should switch to attending a temple to bring them better luck through prayer. Or maybe a combination of the 2. We all know Woodsy the Owl doesn't have a fightin chance, but I don't see us over-performing.
Penn State: 27
Temple: 3
here's the deal. joepa is the man. say what you will, but without joepa i would have grown up in a glorified clearfield dating my sister/cousin. he built this place and for that i think he deserves our love. it really killed me to see him go down like he did last week...it was like some teenager cutting in line at the grocery store on my grandma...not cool.
i agree with roberto here...i also thought greener days would come when joepa was gone, but i am not so sure. i think we will all miss the old guy much more than we think...because when we lose (which we will, because no one wins every game), we will no longer hang on to having the greatest coach ever, staying up all night to watch an fsu collapse, or the love of what joepa has done for all of us, etc., it will just be a loss. simple as that. so with that in mind i say we enjoy joe and his crazy ways while we have the time. Remember, Uncle Jim might be a bit slow and tell jokes that make you uncomfortable, but you sure would miss him at Thanksgiving...
the only thing that held him back was his loyalty...to his staff, his favorite play from 1972, and his son...all traits that make you a great man, but maybe (just maype) not a great leader...
down with dope...up with hope!
anyway, i see a nits win (31-7)...and in tribute to the man, i hope on the first, first and goal bradley sees they run it up the middle.
War JoePa...War to firing the offensive staff at the end of the year.
JayPa blows...
It's just getting so difficult to come up with posts on this board when every day afterwards a little piece of me dies inside. I see teams around the country who have young players that don't take 5 years to mature. Teams that can make a 4th and 1. Teams that, I don't know...SCORE AN OFFENSIVE TOUCHDOWN. Oh yeah, and what happened to be being '1 or 2 players away' a few years ago? Well, we got them, didn't we? Why is it that they don't really make a difference?
So, this week, and all weeks from now on, I must move forward with the only method of self-presevation I know of: expect nothing, and never be let down. Look for small victories. A first down. An offensive score. An offensive play that doesn't result in yellow laundry all over the field. From now on, that's all I ask. Wins are just icing on the cake.
So, in keeping with that theme, I sadly must predict the following, because if I am let down again, I might be forced to burn my house down, move to Eugene, and become an Oregon Ducks fan:
PSU 10
Temple 7
(Go Ducks)
